The Nott Family Highlights

W.H.Nott born 1842

Copy of marriage certificate of W.H.Nott and G.Herrera

W.H.Nott ran away to sea at an early age 14years and finally jumped ship in South America.

Leaving South America for South Africa and arrived in SA before the birth of John Nott in 1878.

I assume all the time spent in Uruguay, W.H.Nott was finally able to speak Spanish.

However all still somewhat illiterate “I assume.” Clearly there are errors, however we now have the ability of correcting these and getting closer to the facts.

The translation that I have managed to derive with various inputs are quite interesting.

Marriage certificate document is dated 23 January 1873

Its strange that William Henry would use – Guillermo Enrique and fathers name John as Juan

The marriage certificate  of (William Henry) Guillermo Enrique Nott, single, natural of England, and member of this delegation …. legitimate son of Mr “John” Juan Nott and Susana Williams, … thirty years old

Miss Gavina Herrera, single and natural of this …., daughter of Leoneor Herrera. (the word legit was crossed out, so I assume she was illegitimate .. no fathers name given) twenty years old

Married in a church of Lady of Sorrows  of San Salvador I assume a Catholic church in Uruguay.

Signed testament,  Señor Miguel Sillo  and Señor Anastar, without prejudice and in truth…

Interesting reading was the diary of events written by WHNott with his Nysa Expedition in 1925 &26. (copy attached below)

My comments:
In trying to trace this expedition, of course this was done with Williams wife (Grace Evans – William refers to as Eve) its seems that this event was mainly in Tanzania. It started off in Dar es Salaam walking (marched) through Tanzania to Lake Nyasa, distances are mind boggling and travelling the length of the lake. Exiting at Fort Johnson. Travelling to Blantyre, Beira, LM and then to Johannesburg.
This diary does not end here but carries on to the Eastern Cape and then a trip on the Union Castle, St Helena, Ascension, Bathurst, Cape Blanco, Las Palmas, Maderia, Teneriffe and Southampton.

In the diary i picked up the fact that they had 2 children, of which i was not aware. Harold and Frank schooling at Dale College.

Discovered the 8th largest meteorite in Tanzania. Called the Mbozi meteorite. 1930.
